Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment that reduces the signs of aging. Made out of the neurotoxic protein botulinum toxin, Botox both treats and prevents wrinkles by freezing the muscles underneath each line.

The injections minimize your facial muscle movement, which relaxes the skin on top and prevents it from wrinkling any further.

What can Botox treat?

Because Botox paralyzes the muscles it’s injected into, it directly treats dynamic wrinkles — wrinkles that form due to repeated muscle movement. Balboa Medical Center & Spa recommends Botox and other injectables to treat the following types of wrinkles:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Lip lines
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Marionette lines around the mouth
  • Bunny lines around the nose
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Frown lines

Balboa Medical Center & Spa can also inject Botox to prevent excessive sweating.

While injectables like Botox are highly effective at smoothing dynamic wrinkles, Balboa Medical Center & Spa recommends dermal fillers for static wrinkles — wrinkles that form due to volume loss and saggy skin.

Are there other types of Botox?

Balboa Medical Center & Spa offers several types of Botox at their office:

Xeomin®

Similar to Botox, Xeomin temporarily reduces wrinkles between the eyebrows. According to the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, some experts believe Xeomin lasts slightly longer than Botox because it contains no additives and doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

Dysport®

Dysport is another type of botulinum toxin, similar to Botox and Xeomin, which minimizes the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles.

What can I expect from my Botox appointment?

At your initial consultation, you and  Balboa Medical Center & Spa can decide the best areas to inject your Botox. When you return to the office, he performs the Botox injections as planned. He may use a topical anesthetic to numb your skin beforehand.

The injections take effect in a few days and the most noticeable results typically develop after about two weeks. Botox lasts between three to four months before it gradually wears off.

Because Botox is safe and effective, you can return to Balboa Medical Center & Spa for maintenance treatments as needed.
